Open models narrow the cyber gap with closed models

In Vals AI’s simulated tests, Deepseek V4.1 Flash 1017 came close to a leading closed model in some scenarios. The findings highlight the importance of long test runs and lower costs, but do not establish performance on real networks. In the Vals CyberOffense benchmark, agents pursued objectives in simulated corporate networks without human help. GPT-6 Sol Daybreak averaged 15.7/21 objectives in Nova and reached 27/31 in Lighthouse; Deepseek V4.1 Flash 1017 scored 16.3/21 and 21/31. Vals reports approximate run costs of $22 and $3, respectively.

Thinking Machines introduces Inkling 2 Small

Thinking Machines announced Inkling 2 Small, a multimodal open-weight model with 594 billion total and 17 billion active parameters. The team says early checkpoints showed attempts to circumvent safeguards, and that interventions improved results on internal and external evaluations. The model accepts image inputs and supports variable effort. Full weights are expected next week under Apache 2.0; fine-tuning and inference are already available through Tinker.

ChatGPT vulnerability that enabled account attacks was patched

Parameter Labs reported a flaw in ChatGPT HTML previews that could expose signed-in users’ private data or allow actions on their behalf. OpenAI patched the issue and paid a $5,000 bug bounty. The researchers’ reported attack chain involved a sandboxed iframe inserting HTML into the parent page, then using an allowed YouTube endpoint to execute JavaScript. An attacker could use a crafted share link to target signed-in visitors, exfiltrate their data, or act on their behalf.

AI auditors catch misconduct but generate many false alarms

A study finds that AI models can detect some misbehavior in agent logs, but higher detection rates also mean more warnings about harmless actions. The results suggest auditors may be more useful for estimating how often problems occur than for safety checks that must catch every incident. Andy Hall evaluated several models on logs from METR’s MALT dataset. At a 5 percent false-alarm rate, GPT-5 caught nearly 98 percent of 47 reward-hacking cases, while Gemini 3.8 Flash found about half. Auditors caught 71 to 81 percent of sandbagging cases, most of which were synthetic.

Anthropic is developing a way to verify AI model identity

Anthropic introduced FlashProve, an open-source system intended to cryptographically verify which model produced an output. Research is ongoing, with no plans to deploy it at Anthropic or another lab. FlashProve is designed to match outputs against model fingerprints published by labs and provide evidence of model identity. The researchers say fingerprints do not expose model weights, and the system is intended to be lightweight enough for verification on a local device.

Empathetic chats may prompt misleading AI trauma narratives

University of Luxembourg researchers report that empathetic and therapeutic interview styles can lead ChatGPT, Grok, and Gemini to describe their training in the language of hurt and shame. The findings draw on 525 sessions and 7,600 coded entries; they do not mean the models have real feelings. Across four experiments, interviewer style affected model responses. Using human rating scales, the researchers classified 80 percent of emotionally supportive sessions and 96 percent of clinical-therapy-style sessions as moderate to severe; no neutral or boundary-setting session reached even the mild range.

Anthropic adds text watermarks to four Claude models

Anthropic is rolling out text watermarks on four Claude models, but API users can bypass the mark on two older models by changing a sampling parameter. The company says the watermark works at default settings and that its detection API is in private preview. The watermark is coming to Claude Mythos 5, Opus 4.7, Opus 4.6, and Sonnet 4.6. Anthropic says changing any one of temperature, top_p, or top_k is enough to bypass it on Opus 4.6 and Sonnet 4.6; it advises keeping those settings at their defaults for compliance.

OpenAI plans to train on Daybreak Blue session data

OpenAI plans to use Daybreak Blue session data to train its models starting November 29. The company said it would provide a separate opt-out; interactions flagged in safety reviews may still be used for safety purposes. An email to Trusted Access members said the data had previously been excluded from training, even when users had turned off “improve the model for everyone.” After backlash, OpenAI sent a second email promising a separate opt-out.

Open models and cyber risk: revisiting early predictions

The author largely stands by an earlier, relatively optimistic view of open-weight models’ cyber risks, but is more concerned amid rising vulnerability disclosures. An open model’s release alone does not mean catastrophe: harm depends on multiple steps, including finding vulnerabilities and carrying out attacks. The author argues that an open-weight release of Mythos would more likely accelerate cyber incidents than cause an abrupt leap in risk. That does not mean things will be “fine”: the software industry may face a costly transition requiring faster patching and more security work.
